# FAQ: Technical SEO, GEO & AEO

## FAQ

**What is GEO, and what is AEO?**

GEO stands for generative engine optimization: optimizing so that generative AI systems mention and cite your brand in their answers. AEO stands for answer engine optimization and targets direct answer formats, where the question is answered without anyone scanning a list of results. In practice the two interlock: the same content has to be unambiguous, factually verifiable and easy for a machine to read.

**How is this different from classic SEO?**

SEO optimizes for your page appearing high in a list of results. GEO optimizes for a model drawing on your content when it answers a question, and naming you while it does. That shifts the emphasis away from keyword density and towards clearly named entities, verifiable statements, clean structure and accessibility for AI crawlers. SEO and GEO do not replace each other, they stack.

**What does an AI visibility audit cover?**

We put a set of realistic buying and research questions to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and the AI overviews and AI Mode in search. We record whether you are mentioned, what is said about you, whether it is accurate, which sources are drawn on and who gets named instead. The result is a findings report with baseline figures to measure the rest of the work against.

**Do I still need classic SEO?**

Yes. AI systems draw to a large extent on the same content that classic search indexes. A page that is technically unreachable or thin on substance will not be chosen as a source by a model either. GEO builds on a working SEO foundation and adds what models need on top. That is why the technical SEO foundation is part of our scope: crawling, indexing, canonicals and hreflang, sitemaps and Core Web Vitals.

**How do you measure AI visibility?**

Through repeated, identically worded queries to the same systems at fixed intervals. We track the citation rate (how often you appear in the answer), brand accuracy (how correct what is said about you is) and the comparison with the competitors named instead. The figures live in a dashboard, and we discuss deviations in the reporting.

**How long until something changes?**

We deliver the audit and the technical groundwork as a setup in one to two weeks; larger rebuilds are planned after scoping. When AI answers change depends on how quickly each system refreshes its knowledge, so from implementation onwards we measure against the baseline at fixed intervals. GEO is ongoing work, not a one-off intervention.
